About Michael Chiarello
With four television series on the Food Network, six cookbooks, and known for Napa Valley icon the Tra Vigne Restaurant, Chef Michael Chiarello is also the creator of NapaStyle specialty foods and handcrafted products for the kitchen, home, and garden. Born and raised in California’s Central Valley, Michael has been exposed to the deep and rich cultures of food, and became accustomed to a lifestyle which grew directly out of their land. “Food – its cultivation, preservation, and preparation – centered our family life,” says Michael Chiarello. With a degree from The Culinary Institute of America, Michael’s success has gone up and beyond his expectations – he has consistently earned accolades as one of the top chefs in the country, including Chef of the Year by Food & Wine magazine and Culinary Institute of America.
When Michael became founding chef of Tra Vigne in Napa Valley, he relied on local farmers just as his Calabrian family did generations ago. He made fresh mozzarella from local curd, pressed his very own olive oils, comprised his pantry with essential spice blends, and eventually grew his own unique style of California-Italian cooking. Napa Valley has been more than a source of inspiration for Michael – it is his way of life. He describes the lifestyle as “infectious. And it goes far beyond food. It is about creating new traditions and passing down old ones. Not all that different from life in Calabria.”
Two of Michael’s newest television shows, Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello, and NapaStyle, are excellent guides to re-create his style of cooking and living seasonally. Whether it is simple or complex, season- or location-inspired, both shows emphasize the importance of spectacular ingredients, practiced technique, and imaginative presentation. “Food comes alive for me when it tells a story, and nearly every dish I make has one – of a childhood hike with my family to forage for mushrooms, of an afternoon spent canning tomatoes with neighbors. When I cook or eat those dishes, the flavors remind me of those wonderful experiences and the friends and family who helped prepare them.” Michael Chiarello created NapaStyle to share these stories and the rich, uncomplicated lifestyle that Napa Valley inspires – and to encourage you to start your own traditions around the best of every season. “Turning the ordinary into the extraordinary – that’s living NapaStyle!”
