Comments about TEC Grills Sterling II FR Propane Grill:
I have owned a TEC G3000 grill for 3 years now and just got this Sterling II for a smaller place. The Sterling II is built with the same attention to detail and design as the G3000, it grills the same way and has the same basic features so figured I'd use the same description I did for the G3000 here.
We keep the G3000 on our deck in VT with no cover where it sees a lot of use and weather. After 3 years out in the elements it still looks almost new (aside from the pine-pitch that has fallen from the pine tree above it onto it). The best thing about this grill is that it gets extremely hot, much hotter than any direct fired grill. I'm a huge fan of the infared heat. In addition to cooking food fast, and keeping it juicy, I think the best thing about the high temperature is the ability of this grill to self clean. After cooking you just crank the heat on high for 5-10 minutes and anything that dripped onto the grill is vaporized (sort of like a self-cleaning oven that actually works)! This grill is used by a lot of different family members, many who are bad about cleaning up after themselves. This grill solves that problem.
I was a little skeptical of the glass surface that is under the metal grilling area (normally you would find some sort of fake-briquette type things there instead). Having used it now for 3 years I'm a huge fan. By keeping the meat drippings off the sensitive parts of the grill (where the gas comes out) the grill will last a lot longer and again needs much less cleaning.
Once by mistake I left this grill on high overnight with the top down (it is plumbed directly into our gas-line). This is obviously a BIG no-no, in any event the grill handled it very well, the only thing that broke was the starter. Due to the excessive heat the plastic on it slumped a little, which must have damaged it somehow. One call to TEC and they had a replacement part out the next day. I was very impressed, with a lot of other grills I probably would have burnt the house down.
The grill is also very good in high-wind conditions. I hesitate to say this will be the last grill you'll ever buy, because 'ever' is a long time, but I'd expect to get 10-20+ years of very abusive use out of this grill.
Service and delivery comments:
